What Is Market Appointment?

More than a creative practice, fashion is a source of entertainment, cultural force and trillion-dollar industry. In this newsletter, we will examine the forces influencing fashion, including business, history, marketing and media. We will place fashion within larger social and historical structures.

With constructive commentary, original interviews, historical deep dives, book/documentary reviews and reported pieces, Market Appointment aims to cultivate an audience of critical consumers. Together we will discuss how business shapes the way we consume fashion, explore retail shops and subcultures from across the globe, and interview fashion insiders on the ins and outs of the industry.

About Me

I was the kid who kept a notebook filled with sketches and hosted fashion shows at home for my parents and sisters. That girl cherished the dream of working in fashion someday, but being an immigrant kid, she pursued a traditional field when she moved to New York.

Ironically, New York would be the place that opened her eyes to the possibility of that dream. While I studied neuroscience in college, I modeled for my school’s magazine, won third place at an essay contest, and launched my fashion media platform NYCXCLOTHES. I also interned at CollegeFashionista and Hearst Magazines, juggling these unpaid opportunities with the hope that they would amount to something.

My goal with this Substack is to write the next chapter of my fashion writing story. I find joy in reading books and finding connections between seemingly disparate sources of information. I love watching documentaries that complete my understanding of a designer’s philosophy or help me grasp the magnitude of an issue people should care about. I am inspired by the independent journalists and publications that are challenging mainstream media by asking the hard questions, reading between the lines and telling stories that inspire and motivate. I hope you will join me in my journey to do the same.
